I love a story that plays with linear timelines. But once I was a few pages in, I was hooked. When I started it, I thought I wasn’t enjoying it, but I soon realised this was my mind expecting it to be dense and unreadable. Ishiguro’s work is absorbing, readable, and relatable. Because all too often, the people who give those awards consider mass appeal a disqualifying element.īut The Remains of the Day is a classic for a reason. This is why I always go into “literary” or famously award-winning books with caution. It’s a Booker Prize winning novel from an author with a Nobel Prize for Literature.īut then, sometimes things like this are more of a sign a book is unreadable, loved only by literally snobs. I don’t need to be here telling people that The Remains of the Day is a good book.
